While it is effective, it can be damaged thereby reducing its effectiveness and defeating the second purpose, that of containing Chernobyl's Radiation Field. Once the suit's integrity is compromised, the aforementioned Radiation Field is fully activated. As this power is 'always on' any living being that comes within a meter of Chernobyl will be injured by it. 'Compromised' means any damage to the suit through 'ablation'.
