| BACKGROUND | |||
|
While returning home from the theater Arthur Blackwood stumbled upon two
men attacking a young woman. Raised an English gentleman, Blackwood
immediately ran to the damsel's rescue. Like a knight of old, he waded
into the melee, fists striking down one foe even as the second slipped a
knife into his back. In a pool of blood he lay, the girl cradling his
head and sobbing, knowing she had been saved by this man at the cost of
his very life. Out of the dark an apparition came to Arthur Blackwood
and pointed west. "Go ye onto the city of the Golden Bridge for thy reward for thy valor awaits thee." Blackwood did not die for in that moment the his mortal wound was staunched and though he spent three weeks in hospital he recovered with little ill effect but a scar. One thing intruded on his every conscious moment, the words of a shadowy form, and upon his release from medical care he boarded a west bound plane. A cab carried him from San Francisco International north, through the City by the Bay, to the Golden Gate Bridge. Over the objections of the cabbie, soothed by a huge tip, Blackwood soon stood at the exact center of the Golden span. From the very heavens, a golden ray shone down upon him, bathing him and gathering him in to it. Before the astounded cabbie, he vanished. A great castle stood before him, its draw bridge down, portcullis up, a warm light beckoning Blackwood to come home. Tentatively he entered the courtyard to find four great war horses, each in full barding, all bearing the red cross of the Crusaders. A huge iron-bound oak door opened as he approached to reveal a spacious hall hung with rich tapestries and warmed by a tremendous open hearth fireplace. The smells of roasting meat and fresh baked bread my Arthur Blackwood's mouth water. Stepping in he was greeted by a tall elderly knight in the tabard of a Crusader. "Welcome, Brother," he said in a deep sonorous voice. With a bow, the knight gestured that Blackwood should join him at the head of the table. Two other knights appeared and took seats across the table from the bewildered Arthur and his greeter joined them. "Each of us has had the privilege of donning the mantle of the Crusader, a paladin of great prowess, and each has been defeated or sacrificed his life in battle against great evil," explained his greeter. He stood and drew his sword. "Now is the time for a new Crusader to come into the world and take up this sword in defense of those who cannot defend themselves," he said, presenting the naked weapon on his open palms. Blackwood took up the weapon, its feel natural in his hand. The second rose and removed the shield from his arm, presenting it to the astonished Blackwood. Arthur slipped his arm through the straps and the shield's weight, or lack of it, surprised him. The third knight rose and removed his helm. Stepping around the table he lifted it high over the Englishman's head. All perceptions shift, sharpened, as the helm covered his head for the first time. A gentle warm surrounded him, a flash of light momentarily blinded him. When his vision cleared the three knight wore not but long robes of unbleached homespun and simple sandals. "You are Crusader, now and forever!" the three proclaimed in unison. No longer did Arthur Blackwood stand before them dressed in a suit of dark grey wool. Now there was only the armored form of the Paladin known as Crusader! |

| POWERS/TACTICS | |||
| Crusader relies heavily on his sword prowess and the magic inherent in his magic armor and helm. Some years back all his items of power were stolen from him by Tsar in an effort to force Crusader to develop his budding magic skill. To a degree this was successful but to this day Crusader prefers the direct approach to a problem and if a sword is not enough he is asea. One major skill he has is the ability to heal, called 'Paladins Touch'. Ever he is prepared to render aid to the injured. | |||
