Description: | |||||
Carin is 5’8” and weighs about 139 pounds. She has blond hair which she wears long, down to between her shoulder blades, and hazel eyes. While she does not possess the stunning beauty of Mal or the elegance of Wren she has a wholesome girl-next-door quality that never fails to draw the eye even when she is surrounded by her teammates. Being a Texas girl she is partial to jeans, cowboy boots and plaid shirts but lately she has been asking for clothing advice from both Mal and Wren. Though never one to wear much in the way of makeup, she has joined Christiana in taking lessons from Mari, who really doesn’t NEED makeup but loves it.
BACKGROUND | |||||
One wheel spun slowly to a stop as the rain washed blood down the rocky soil to mingle in a growing rivulet that would become a tributary to a river that would grow to feed the Adriatic. Private First Class Raymond ‘Ray’ Masterson, US Army, had dropped his charges off near the top of the mountain and started back to base when the storm had thundered over the ridge to reduce visibility to a few meters. Fate has intervened to place a boulder the size of the vehicle in just such a way as to set it tumbling down the mountain at the exact time to allow it to intersect with road at precisely the wrong time. It was just an unfortunate accident. Dallas that spring day was warm with soft wildflower-scented breezes to waft the aroma of barbeque across the lawn and into the twenty room colonial mansion. A girl stopped as she buttoned up her blouse, fingers trembling, as the black cloud seemed to cover the sun. Ignoring the last few buttons, she threw open the door to her bedroom and raced barefoot down the main staircase to her father’s study. Without knocking, a terrible no-no, she burst into the room, tears already streaming down her cheeks. Her mother was enfolded in her father’s arm as he cradled the old-fashion desk phone. Their eyes met and her world went dark. It took three hours to find the girl, her parents, the entire staff and all the party guests searching the thirty acres of immediately surrounding the house. Using 4x4s, horses, motorcycles and pickups she was at last discovered lying at the bottom of a draw just upstream of the pond. When the man that found her, a neighbor she’d known all of her life, tried to lift her to carry her up the slope, she had attacked him, pounding on his chest while sobbing uncontrollably. It was only when a girl her own age heard the commotion and came to her that she stopped. It was Carin Masterson’s fourteenth birthday. Mark Law sat with his back ramrod straight, eyes forward, hands clasped at the exact center of the desk when Carin first saw him. With his ‘high n’ tight’ haircut, chiseled features and blue eyes she was lost before he said a word. Taking a seat beside him, she emulated his posture and waited silently for the rest of her class to file in. Trying not to watch him out of the corner of her eye she contemplated the events that had brought her to this sun drenched outcropping of rock 1500 miles from her home. The psychologist explained that the trauma of her older brother’s death and triggered her latent meta powers. She was a teleporter and her first instinctive teleport had taken her to the secret place she’d shared only with Ray for her whole life. Once back to the house, the doctor had come and given her something to calm her but though most of the following days had been a blur, one thing she remembered was how to repeat that short journey. Over the next few weeks she had tested her limits until she’d found herself in the ladies room at the local mall more than ten miles from her home. For the briefest instant she had been literally part of the bathroom sink and it had hurt bad enough that she refused to try another teleport for nearly a month. Then the man in the suit showed up. His name, he said, was Miller and Carin hated him on sight. Her father had taken the man into the study and talked with him for more than an hour before emerging, shaking hands with the creep. She flew into San Diego on September 1st and by the 4th, she was in class at a new school for people like her, metas. She had to work hard to get Mark to notice her, he seems only interested in them as a military unit but when she asked him to go to a Christmas party he began to thaw. Her walnut colored hair was piled atop her head leaving her shoulders bare. The red sequined dress was short, barely covering the tops of her thighs which made her blush but Mark’s open-mouthed reaction when she opened the door to him made it all worth it. The clear plastic box he held in one hand forgotten, he seemed incapable of speech for several long seconds. She held out her hand for the box, “For me?” Law blinked as if awakening from hypnosis. “Sorry,” he stammered. “Yes.” He handed the box to her. Inside was a corsage of holly, mistletoe and poinsettia. She opened the top and lifted it out. “Would you pin it on?” she said, offering him the flower and her breast. He took the corsage then realized what she was asking and hesitated. She smiled and blushed. “It’s okay,” she said. “Go ahead. Just don’t stick me.” Awkwardly Mark slipped the pin through the sequins at the top of her dress, the backs of his fingers hot against her skin as he used them to block any chance of sticking her. She flushed, enjoying the feel of his touch on the top of her breast. Pulling his hands back he looked into her eyes for the first time. Without thought she came up on her tiptoes and kissed him on the cheek. “Thank you,” she whispered. “It’s beautiful.” The year Mark was at Fort Benning what the longest year of Carin’s life but she kept busy with classes as UCSD. When he came back to San Diego she was terrified everything had changed. The Delta flight was twenty minutes late and she paced nervously back and forth just outside the boarding area. They’d talked several times a week on the phone and e-mail or IM’d daily but he’d been going through what he said was the toughest training in the military and she was worried his feelings for her might have changed. When the jet rolled up to the boarding ramp, she had to fight back the desire to press her nose to the glass like a little girl and when she saw him come out of the tube in his uniform, his shoulders looking twice as broad as before she almost teleported into his arms. He dropped his carryon and lifted her from her feet, his powerful arms crashing her to his chest then his lips were on hers and all of her fears vanished. People eddied around them smiling at the reunion of one of America’s warriors and his girl. Several patted Mark on the back with a whispered ‘welcome home’. Someone started for clap and Carin became aware they were the center of attention and the crowd broke out into cheers. Mark blushed nearly as red as Carin when he scooped up his tote. With his freehand he waved at everyone then encircled Carin’s waist and led her toward baggage claim. A few lewd whistles followed them but Carin didn’t care. Mark was back and he still loved her. She was running late, she hated to be late and Mark hated it when ANYONE one late, even her. Breathless she slammed open the gym doors and found the place empty. Puzzled she headed for the field doors figuring Mark already had the new team running laps. As she came out the door a dumpster crossed her line of sight and disappeared out over the Pacific. Rounding the corner of the building she found her entire team along with what had to be the new team introducing themselves. Mark was nowhere to be seen. Approaching Malin Tornquist, an ethereal Nordic beauty the longest blondest hair she’d ever seen, she asked, “Where’s Mark?” An incredibly tall guy with short sun-bleached hair and a deep tan lifted an eyebrow at her. Belle, a normally hostile African American girl burst out laughing and pointed toward the ocean. “What?” Carin said, scowling. She didn’t care for Belle’s sense of humor in the first place. Mal said, “Oh, dear.” “WHAT!” Carin demanded, growing angry and a little worried. A raven-haired girl with the body of a goddess, Mari, put a hand on Carin’s shoulder. “Mark . . . um . . . “ Mari covered her mouth with a hand. Carin’s eyes filled with tears. “Cari,” Mal said. “Mark, being Mark, bit off a little more than he could chew. He should be back in a few hours.” The tall blonde guy cleared his throat. “I . . . um . . . tossed him into the ocean,” he said. “You did what?” Carin couldn’t believe what she was hearing. The giant shrugged. “I told him not to curse at Wren,” he said indicating a slender girl at his side who was probably six foot tall herself. “What did you DO?!” she demanded. “He crammed him into a garbage can and pinched it closed,” Belle laughed. “Then threw it into the ocean.” Carin glared at the young giant. “You better get him back!” she growled. “Now!” “Nat just throws ‘em,” a guy she didn’t know said. “Usually we don’t want them back!” Carin turned tear-filled accusing eyes on the guy ‘Nat’. “I hate you!” she hissed then she saw something she never expected, real remorse in the giant’s eyes. He turned to the group. “Okay, senior team, I don’t know your powers, but I do know my team’s,” he said. “Wren, lighten me up, Zach, take Alicia and follow that dumpster. Alicia, you scan for Mark while Zach flies you. Fuji, you drag me, I’ll go into the water if we need to rescue him.” He pointed Ern, a native American member of the senior team. “Eagle, right?” Ern nodded once. “Fuji isn’t very fast, you think you can fly me out there?” “You are a big guy,” Ern said. “Might not be able to lift you.” “Wren will fix that,” he again indicated the slender girl at his side. “Who else flies on your team, Mal?” “Glory, Nemesis and me,” Mal replied. “Glory’s faster than Eagle.” “Eagle, huh,” the giant said, then to Ern. “Can you take Wren so she can turn off the anti-grav on me?” “Sure,” Ern replied. “Let’s move people,” he said and they were gone leaving Carin more than a little stunned as the speed of their reaction. Out over the Pacific Ocean the boy Zach and the girl Alicia found Mark inbound with a head of steam. Carin later learned Zach flew a few circles around Mark, taunting him before the giant she came to know as Nat Ryan arrived with Glory and told him to stop. Ryan, it seemed, offered an apology but reiterated he would do it again if Mark’s attitude didn’t shift. It was very hard for Mark to agree but Carin knew the big guy had shocked him to the core with how casually Ryan had bested him. That and the fact Ryan had almost instantly put together a team for come out and ‘rescue’ him even if he didn’t need it. It was the thought that had counted. Something had changed too in her relationship with Mark. He has become more thoughtful and appreciative of her. The hard-driven military side of him began to soften as the weeks passed and they trained with the junior team. Mark saw the relationship Nat Ryan had developed with his group and how the big man treated them with respect and concern. What he was seeing in Ryan was what he had seen in his father, a true leader. Carin came to love Nat Ryan for that, as a brother, of course. Mark was the only one for her. Note: Blinks is a nickname given to her by her brother, Ray when she was a little girl and he used it teasingly for the rest of his life. Though her family is aware of the nickname, out of respect for her brother, none use it. At some point she is likely to share it with Mark but that time hasn't come, yet. |

POWERS/TACTICS | |||||
Originally Carin was seen by Mark Law as a method of transport only but since Nat Ryan's arrival she has become a major part of all Team Red's battle plans. She uses her Aportation powers to either move her teammates around, pull people out of dangerous situations or even teleport the injured to a hospital or a criminal to a poilce station. She can pull the whole team out in the blink of an eye. In all but emergent combat situations, Carin will pick a safe location miles from a combat scene and set it as her EVAC points. Much of her time now is spent teleporting innocent buystanders to safety as well as the injured. Her newest ability is the 'Gate' which she is able to open between her current location and any Floating/Fixed Teleportation location. With this she is able to move somewhere around 40 people in less than a minute. As it is a Gate, it will work both ways and is usable by anyone who wishes to pass through it. |

PERSONALITY/MOTIVATION
Carin’s loss of her older brother a couple of years ago made her withdraw from her friends and it wasn’t until Mark Law entered her life that she began to emerge from her self-imposed seclusion. Slowly she is returning to the friendly out-going girl she was in Texas but is more easily embarrassed then she once was. As Liberty she is totally reliant on Ranger to provide her with directions and if he were not available it is possible she would be at a loss for what to do in a combat situation. On the personal side she was practically born in the saddle and was, up until her brother’s tragic death, a promising rodeo rider. Since her powers began to manifest both her riding and roping have improved remarkably. She has been schooled in all things concerning horses and plans to study veterinary medicine in college. She has yet to convince Mark Law that horses will not stomp him into the mud first chance they get and lives for the day she can get him on a horse. |
